Jessica Lindsay Smith's live score to Metropolis

LongPlay, 318 St Georges Rd, Fitzroy North

Jessica Lindsay Smith is a composer, performer, and sound artist who creates music that defies the boundaries of genre. Alongside guitarist Robbie Melville, and drummer/percussionist Maddison Carter, they bring to life a through-composed and improvised score. Electronic manipulation of sound and improvisation bring a new perspective to the increasingly relevant triumph of silent cinema Metropolis.

Robbie Melville Quartet

Cross Street Hall, 16 - 22 Cross Street, East Brunswick

The Robbie Melville Quartet is the latest project from the guitarist and composer, winner of the Instrumental Category of the 2018 International Song Competition. With the sympathetic rhythm section of bassist Tamara Murphy and drummer Maddison Carter, and featuring Zoe Knighton on cello, the quartet explore a juxtaposition of heavily structured arrangements with free spirited extemporisation, informed in equal measure by contemporary jazz and Norwegian folk, the sparse and playful writings of Richard Brautigan, the photography of Viktor Kolář, the film soundtracks of Mark Orton. Delicate, humourous, ethereal, intimate and quirky.

Nat Bartsch Quartet

Phoenix Central Park, 49 O'Connor Street, Chippendale NSW

Nat Bartsch’s ‘Hope Renewed’ is a jazz/post-rock re-interpretation of her ARIA-nominated neoclassical album, ‘Hope’. The original album is a gentle suite for piano and strings, responding to the struggles of 2020. ‘Hope Renewed’, in contrast, represents a post-pandemic era. The album creates an intricate and immersive patchwork of sound, recorded by Nat’s jazz quartet.
